Safer Local Pickup: A Buyer/Seller Checklist
A practical local-transfer checklist covering on-platform communication, suitable meeting plans, helpers, item verification, payment confirmation, privacy, and scam response.

Choose a transfer plan suited to the object
Small portable goods can often be inspected at a suitable public location. A sofa or appliance may require home pickup. For home pickup, avoid publishing the precise address, have another adult present when possible, limit access to the transfer area, secure unrelated valuables, and confirm that the buyer brings the stated vehicle and help.
Follow building rules for elevators, loading zones, and hours. Do not attempt unsafe lifting to save a sale. If weather, person, vehicle, or timing changes the risk, reschedule or stop.

Confirm details on-platform
Confirm exact item, price, condition acknowledgment, payment method, date, window, pickup area, stairs, disassembly, and helper responsibility. Keep early messages on the platform when recommended. Do not share codes, account passwords, financial credentials, or unnecessary identity data.
Share the exact address only when the plan is credible and the timing appropriate. Tell a trusted person the plan. Keep a charged phone available and choose an exit route that does not trap the seller behind a large object.
Inspect and verify before transfer
Allow reasonable inspection of the item and defects described. Reconfirm included components. Do not sell a recalled product; verify the official recall result before publication, not while the buyer waits.
For powered items, demonstrate only when it can be done safely. Disconnect accounts and personal data. Do not let a buyer connect unknown devices to the household network merely to test a sale.

Verify payment yourself
Open the official payment service independently and confirm the transaction status. Do not trust screenshots, emails, links, accidental overpayments, or requests to send money to a mover. The FTC's fake-check guidance explains why apparent bank availability is not proof a check is good.
Use the method agreed before pickup. If the buyer changes terms under pressure, pause. Never reveal a verification code or pay a fee to ‘upgrade’ an account in order to receive money.

Close the record
After successful transfer, mark sold, remove other listings, record the price and relevant costs, and retain only the transaction evidence you need. Do not keep a buyer's address or profile data in a resale dataset without a defined purpose.
If the interaction becomes suspicious or unsafe, end it, move to safety, report through the marketplace, and contact local authorities when appropriate. No estimated value justifies overriding a safety stop.

Plan for no-shows, damage, and disputes
Set an arrival window and a message checkpoint. If the person does not arrive, do not leave the item unattended outside with an address visible in the conversation indefinitely. Close the window, secure the item, and contact the next buyer under your published policy.
Photograph the item's condition immediately before transfer when the value or fragility warrants it. Let the buyer inspect and confirm included parts. If damage occurs during buyer loading, prioritize people and property safety, document what happened, and use the applicable platform or payment process rather than escalating at the curb.
Keep the description, agreed terms, and payment record for the period you reasonably need, then delete unnecessary buyer data. A local cash or person-to-person transfer may not carry marketplace purchase protection; both parties should understand the platform's current terms. This checklist reduces uncertainty but cannot guarantee physical safety, payment recovery, or dispute resolution.
Before moving a large object, agree who will disconnect, disassemble, lift, navigate stairs, and load. Protect floors and walls, keep children and pets away from the route, and stop if the plan exceeds anyone's ability. A buyer's arrival does not make an unsafe lift mandatory. Reschedule for more help or choose another route.
After a failed pickup, consider whether the exact address or access information should remain in the conversation. You may not be able to retract messages, but you can avoid adding schedule details and can block or report suspicious accounts. If someone returns uninvited or creates a threat, prioritize local safety resources rather than marketplace negotiation.
